ITINERARY OVERVIEW

Day 1 Arrive in Kolkata and transfer to your centrally located hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore the city’s characterful streets at your own pace. Kolkata Oberoi Grand
Day 2

A city of glaring contrasts, observe both new and old districts of Kolkata on a full-day tour. The city is regarded as India’s cultural capital and the morning is spent engaging with the many artisans and market sellers along the riverbanks of the Hooghly. Visit the colourful Flower Market (the largest in Asia) before heading to Kumartuli via the iconic Howrah Bridge. Kumartuli is a fascinating stop where craftsmen create intricately made beautiful idols out of straw and clay. The rest of the day is spent unveiling Kolkata’s history with stops at Dalhousie Square and the British-era buildings of St Pauls Cathedral and Victoria Memorial Hall.

Finish the day with a serene cruise along the Hooghly River.

Day 3 After breakfast, fly to Bhutan and transfer from Paro Airport to the nation’s capital – Thimphu. Thimphu’s main street is the perfect place for a first glimpse into Bhutanese culture and a short walking tour will uncover the hidden gems of the colourful street. Day 4

Many fascinating highlights can be found in the base of the Thimphu Valley and this morning embark on a full-day tour to discover the chortens, cultural museums and bazaars that make Thimphu such a compelling capital. For exceptional city and valley views, head to Buddha Point first for memorable vistas. Visit the King’s memorial Chorten to observe monks murmuring mantras and spinning prayer wheels and after a authentic lunch, proceed to the textile museum for an overview of traditional Bhutanese attire.

Perhaps Thimphu’s most compelling highlight is the Tashicho Dzong which dominates the skyline. Explore the fortress with your guide before an evening well-spent in the local crafts bazaar.

Day 5 Day 5 of your Bhutanese adventure begins with a gentle hike in the countryside. The Wangditse trail run along the Thimphu Valley lined with prayer flags. Pass farmhouses and rural villages where you are sure to meet many genial locals along the way. This afternoon visit an Arts and Crafts school and the Folk Heritage Museum, both of which wonderfully capture the cultural spirit of Bhutan. Thimphu Hotel Druk
Day 6 Travel along the Dochula Pass to Punakha enjoying the 360 degree vistas of the Himalayas and verdant valley. This afternoon take another short hike in the countryside to the regal Khamsum Yuelley Namgel Chorten which was built by the Queen Mother of Bhutan to remove negative forces and promote peace, stability and harmony in the changing world. The Chorten dominates the upper Punakha Valley with commanding views across the Mo Chhu river and up towards the mountainous peaks of Gasa and beyond. Punakha Meri Puensum Resort
Day 7 Spend the morning with the hosts of the Happiness Fields Homestay learning the ways of a working Bhutanese farm. Afternoon visit to Punakha Dzong, Bhutan’s most sacred Dzong, located on the confluence of the Phochu and Mochu rivers. Day 8 This morning drive to Gangtey, one of the most beautiful and pristine spots in Bhutan. The valley is unlike any other with a flat vast base fringed by steep forested hills. Day 9 A full-day to explore the beauty of the Phobjikha Valley awaits today and begins early with a visit to the Gangtey Gompa which sits atop a hill rising from the valley floor. The valley itself lies on the periphery of the Black-Mountain National Park and is serenely split by two rivers. Hike through the valley with a guide visiting villages en-route and a local community school. The valley is also known for its population of the endangered Black-Necked Cranes and the information centre provides your best chance of spotting them as well as giving you an insight into the cultural history of the area. Day 10 Observe the change in scenery on the drive to Bumthang which passes through the scenic Pele-La mountain pass. En route stop at the colourful stupa of Swayambhunath before a further stop at the Yathra weaving centre. Arrive in Bumthang in the late afternoon and enjoy the evening at leisure to familiarise yourself with the beauty of Bumthang. Bumthang The Village Lodge Jalikhar
Day 11

Comprising of four smaller valleys, Bumthang has a dignified charm with deep spiritual undertones. The day is spent exploring the valley beginning at the Kurje Lhakhang and the 7th century temple of Jambey Lhakhang. Continue to Tamshing Lhakhang which houses some of the oldest wall paintings in Bhutan; and Jakar Dzong – the administrative centre of the region.

The afternoon is spent discovering the serene spots of the valley with the sacred Burning Lake amongst the highlights.

End the day with a Bhutanese culinary demonstration preparing local dishes with the help of expert chefs.

Day 12 Drive the short distance to the Ura Valley and spend the morning hiking through the forests to the village of Ura. Here, be welcomed into several village houses for tea and snacks and visit the small temple located at the top of the village. Bumthang The Village Lodge Jalikhar
Day 13 Spend the night in the small but important town of Trongsa. A historic region, the first kings of Bhutan were based here and the day is spent discovering the history of the early rulers and the lasting influence they left which is still felt in Bhutan today. Trongsa Yangkhil Resort
Day 14 Another spectacular drive today as you head back to Punakha through several valleys. En route stop at the Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the temple of fertility. A walk through the village near the temple will give you rare glimpses into the daily life and lifestyle of the villagers. Day 15 Your last stop in Bhutan is Paro, your home for the next 3 nights. The town itself is surrounded by many smaller hamlets in the picturesque valley of the same name. Paro has retained its traditional way of life and has resisted the modern developments that you might have found in Thimphu. This afternoon visit the Ta Dzong which was a formerly a watchtower but now houses the National Museum and well worth spending a couple of hours exploring. Paro The Village Lodge
Day 16

Spend the morning at the iconic Taktsang Monastery. Bhutanese legends says that Guru Padsambhava came here flying on the back of tigress and meditated at the place where the monastery stands and is thus better known as the Tigers Nest. Hike towards the monastery through forested paths, enjoying the glimpses that unveil themselves at various viewing spots.

In the afternoon, make a short stop of the Drukgyel Dzong before heading back to your hotel and enjoying a traditional hot stone bath, a well-deserved and rewarding experience.

Day 17 After breakfast, drive to Chelela pass. At an elevation of 3,988 meters, Chelela is considered to be one of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan. About an hour’s drive along a thickly forested road, this pass is a botanical paradise providing stunning views of the sacred mountains of Jumolhari and Jichu Drake. Enjoy a picnic lunch and descend for the two-hour hike through dense rhododendron forest to Kila Goemba, an ancient nunnery nestled in a rugged area on the mountainside below.
