One can scarcely mention hotels in Jodhpur, without mentioning Umaid Bhawan. A pleasure palace if ever there were one, this Art Deco masterpiece is the most elaborate of the Maharaja of Jodhpur's many properties. Still, his primary residence Umaid Bhawan's striking yellow sandstone edifice, designed by British architect, Henry Lanchester, began life in 1928 took fifteen years to complete. A homogeny of British and Mughal styles it was the world's six largest private residence, and perched atop Chittar Hill it still enjoys unrivalled views of The Blue City. Twenty-six acres of manicured lawns wrap themselves around the palace like a verdant shawl. The pool, in particular, is a favourite spot, completely secluded it has some of the best city views. Each of Umaid Bhawan's 64 rooms is decorated in the height of Art Deco style with period furnishing and opulent marble bathrooms.
