The Claridges, New Delhi
About
If you're expecting the same standards and service as the iconic Claridges in London, you'll be disappointed. But if you're expecting a quaint and classic hotel, in the midst of Lutyen's Delhi, well The Claridge's Delhi is just the ticket. A hop, skip and a jump from Lodi Gardens, one of Delhi's most pleasant sites, The Claridges enjoys an enviable location. Built in the 1950s, its all white edifice is a nod to a bygone era, and in keeping with the nearby properties. Surrounded by manicured lawns, in a quiet yet central part of town, it is a favourite spot for visiting travellers. Smaller and more intimate than most Delhi hotels, there is a peaceful lawned area, where afternoon tea is still served on rattan furniture. All very civilized. In fact, there are plenty of dining options.
Home to Dhaba restaurant, serving rich North Indian Punjabi dishes: fresh rotis, chicken tikkaand their succulent Balti lamb. Lunch, dinner and some delicious pastries are to be found at the wonderfully named Pickwicks. Maintaining a relaxed environment, The Claridges does not feel its 132 rooms, each of which if decorated in a classic and contemporary style; though worth opting for a balcony room or one with separate sitting area. There is a spa, and a tranquil pool, with wrought iron four-poster daybeds and flowing white linen drapes, giving it a Mediterranean feel.
