About
Built in 1794, this wonderful, traditional Keralan house has been the ancestral home of the Kandath family for more than 300 years. The most striking feature of the building is the unique Keralan design, a front raised area, which forms a semi -open courtyard with grand teak pillars carved with elephants, snakes, fish and dragons. There are just five, air conditioned rooms which are simple but comfortably furnished and give a true sense of how families lived amidst beautiful, traditional architecture.  The house set in a rustic village outside Palakkad Town takes you back to a by gone era, into a countryside that is quiet and calm. A stay here is all about getting off the beaten track and discovering the real Kerala, beyond the main tourist sights. Explore the village, take long walks or cycling trips along small winding roads through an unspoilt countryside and paddy fields and visit the local village temple to watch the evening rituals and puja. In the morning visit the corner tea shop to share your world with that of villagers over a traditionally made chai and in the an evening walk through the village and through the green paddies to watch the sunset. Life here in unhurried. Set meals of local dishes are taken on a shady terrace, or on the lawn in the cool of evening with your interesting and friendly host Bhagwaldas, as well as with other guests. For those looking for a quiet corner to relax and catch up on some reading Tharavad has plenty of spots in and around the house.  This is a wonderful homestay experience that is truly unique.
