Ranvas, Nagur Rajasthan
About
Housed within the Ahhichatragarh Fort, amongst 35 acres of crumbling temples, havelis, and frescoed halls, lies Ranvas. Originally built for Maharaja of Jodhpur's maharanis (so it really is worthy of a Queen) this conversion of ten 18th century havelis into a luxury boutique hotel is an architectural triumph. Maintaining heritage charm whilst accommodating for the modern traveller, the original spaces have been maintained. Breezy courtyards turned open-air living rooms are wonderfully exotic, whilst a central courtyard, with trickling fountains and sonorous peacocks, is something a modern-day Babylon, complete with pomegranate trees. The outdoor pool is equally as inviting. With just 34 rooms, separated across ten havelis, Ranvas is large enough that guests are not on top of each other, yet still allows for an intimate boutique feel. Decorated in traditional Rajasthani fabrics and hues, rooms include ornate touches such as traditional jaali screens, window seating areas, sandstone arches, and Rajasthani furnishing painted by local craftsmen. There are several different spots for dinner, be it the open-air pavilion, indoor restaurant, or guests can opt to eat in their private haveli. Located in the desert town of Naguar, Ranvas is a place to relax and unwind though the hotel will gladly help you arrange a camel ride, and the tour of the palace and museum complex is worth a gander. In February Ranvas plays host to the World Sufi Music Festival.
