You are spoilt for choice in Pondicherry for quaint boutique hotels, but Palais du Mahe is a superlative example. Moments from Mission Street, Pondi's main shopping area, and located in the popular French Quarter, its sunny yellow edifice is instantly recognisable. High colonnades evoke a Gallic elegance whilst its colour palettes provide ample Indo charm. The perfect blend of Colonial French architecture and South Indian style, each of its eighteen rooms have a certain Je ne c'est quoi. Antique four-poster beds, planters and lounge chairs, as well as traditional ceiling fans and writing desks, create a sense of antiquity. All are gorgeous, with their own little sitting areas overlooking the courtyard. There is an unheated pool, which is perfect for a dip on a hot South Indian afternoon, accompanied by a refreshing drink. The restaurant, Les Alice blends Indian flavours with European influences, with a strong emphasis on seafood. Choose from grilled prawns and mutton curry drunken-orange brownies and an Indian favourite, barfi. Breakfast is a choice of the usual Continental fair, including pancakes, waffles, and delicious local coffee. Even if you're not a fan of spice in the morning you should give the local options a try.
