Art & Literature
India is and always has been a hotbed of art, from its ancient temples and sculptures whether carved out of stone or bronzes, massive monolithic structures intricately carved to miniature paintings adorning the walls of maharaja’s places. Today India has vibrant contemporary art scene, with galleries holding exhibitions being held all over the country, pop up artist in residence programs and events such as the Cochin Biennale, the regeneration of Mumbai’s Sassoon Docks and the Indian Art Fair held in Delhi each year. In addition, with no graffiti rules, the street art scene is brightening up many walls around the cities and there are specific art walks which take you on a tour of these.
India has a rich tradition of well versed writers, from Rabindranath Tagore to Arundhati Roy, Anita Desai, Vikram Seth and of course Salman Rushdie in between to name but a few. However the advent of the Jaipur Literature Festival, now the largest free literature festival in the world, ten years ago, has started a chain reaction throughout the country leading to literature festivals being held throughout the year and in many far flung destinations.
If you would like to attend one of these festivals, do mention this to us and we will see if there is one happening that fits in with your dates and itinerary.
