About
Victorian shipyard turned charming boutique hotel, Brunton Boatyard evokes a notable past through its maritime décor, where century-old canons and anchors still remain to adorn the gardens. Nothing archaic about the service, the interiors are ship shape and in keeping with modern standards. Moments from the famous Chinese fishing nets it is without a doubt one of the most iconic stays in Fort Kochi. Built in 1895 its colonial edifice looks out across the harbour. Recline on a sun lounger and watch ships to and fro – once the main highway of India's Spice Route, it is a much more relaxing scene today. Brunton's rooms are a heritage lover's dream: terracotta tiles, Planter's chairs, and four-poster beds, all tied in with traditional Portuguese blue and white palettes and original etchings of the boatyard. The best boast sea views. As with everything in Kochi, the food at Brunton Boatyard is a melting pot of cultures. Dine on a mélange of Portuguese, Dutch, British, and South Indian dishes, all delicately flavoured with accents from a time when pepper was as precious as gold. Afternoon tea out on the terrace is a civilized affair, whilst an evening tipple and a tête-à-tête at The Armoury, surrounded by nautical paraphernalia is highly recommended.
